Although, there are umpteen ways to make cabbage taste good, this one, I'm talking about is damn simple and doesn't take too much time. Even though, you can have this with roti and a wet subji along with, it tastes better with rice. So here is the quick recipe.
Ingredients:
1)Cabbage - 1 cup(cut lengthwise)
2)Onion - 1(small, chopped)
3)Whole Red Chilli - 2(broken)
4)Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
5)Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp
6)Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp
7)Cumin Seeds - 1/4 tsp
8)Salt - to taste
9)Oil - 1 tsp
10)Water - a little
11)Asafetida - a pinch
Preparation:
1)Heat oil in a pan, add asafetida, mustard and cumin seeds, let it splutter.
2)Add broken red chilli and stir for couple of seconds.(Note: Do not burn the red chilli)
3)Now add the chopped onion, turmeric powder and salt, saute till they turn translucent.
4)Add cabbage and mix well.
5)It takes at least 5 minutes for the cabbage to cook, please do sprinkle water and stir well in between.
Also make sure the cabbage doesn't go soggy with the water that you are sprinkling, the right texture of cabbage should be soft yet crunchy.
6)Once the cabbage is done, add red chilli powder and stir well for couple of minutes.
Simple cabbage fry is ready!
Simple and delicious fry
ReplyDeleteThanks Beena!
DeleteYep, yep. I don't know why but I also choose cabbage always. Maybe because I can get the fresh ones over and the price is ok. I have to tell you that this simple cabbage is the best pairing, even with mutton, lamb and beriyani rice. I can't explain why but seems like great minds think alike. Simplicity is the best choose in cooking sometimes and I am always in crisis of time, therefore I am treasuring this simple cabbage.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nava!
DeleteI buy cabbage mainly because, it stays for longer period of time when compared to other veggies. Yep, cabbage for India is like, lettuce for other countries :-)
Can be pared with many interesting dishes for sure.
HaHa, I'm totally with you on the comment - "Great minds think alike" :)
Simplicity is the way to go, always!! Makes life easier.
I'm glad you liked this recipe.
simple and yummy...
ReplyDeleteThanks Bhawna!
DeleteSimple n healthy fiber rich one,I usually add grated coconut too:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie!!
DeleteYes, super fibrous, I don't add coconut - only because when I make it in the morning I have that for dinner too, so coconut kinda spoils the dish in the night, otherwise I love grated coconut too.
Just like you said. I love the this with rice. Just rice and cabbage stir fry :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jannat! Yep plain rice and stir fry any day is a hot favorite.
DeleteThe way you cut the cabbage is lovely. I like to add little coconut milk at last. I know adding coconut to it wont last long.:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Dhanish! I have seen people adding grated coconut, but I have never added coconut milk - It is a good idea, will try some time.
DeleteLove it... Thanks for sharing Pavithra :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Nilu!
DeleteI too made cabbage stir fry day before.. But it's way simpler than this.. Just cabbage, salt & green chilly with mustard spluttered in the beginning.. Way tooo simple na... Deeps likes it that way or I guess he doesnt want me tampering with the veggies much, so staying simple makes it eatable for him :) And my mom makes it ur way :) I love that with rasam or sambar & rice :)
ReplyDeleteI like your simple-o-simple style of cabbage fry. That is even better because you are not meddling with the color of cabbage. I do that too!! Anything to make life simpler , HaHa :)
DeleteYep, I too love them with rasam rice!! Although, cabbage is not very interesting veggie, per se.
