Another staple food from my den.
Ingredients:
1)Toor Dal - a handful
2)Green chilli - 1(medium, slit length-wise)
3)Onion - 1 (small, chopped)
4)Tomato - 1(small, chopped)
5)Oil - 1/2 tsp
6)Ghee - 1/2 tsp
7)Asafetida - a pinch
8)Water - 1/2 cup
9)Mustard & Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
10)Garlic - 3 pods(chopped)
11)Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
12)Salt - to taste
Preparation:
1)Soak toor dal in water for 20 to 30 minutes. Pressure cook the dal with a pinch of asafetida for 4 to 5 whistles.
2)Add 1/2 tsp oil in a pan & add mustard, cumin seeds - let it splutter.
3)Add chopped green chilli & garlic, saute for few seconds until the aroma kicks in.
4)Add chopped onion, salt & saute until they turn translucent. Add turmeric powder & saute well.
5)Add chopped tomatoes, saute until they are done.
6)Add the cooked Dal mixture into the pan, mix well & let it cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
7)Once done, add 1/2 tsp of ghee & remove the pan from heat.
Simple dal fry is ready. It goes very well with rice & roti.
If you fall under the top end of the spice scale, do not forget to add red chilli powder(1/2 spoon) or add one more green chilli. If required, garnish it with chopped coriander leaves. Also Potato Fry is a killer combination with dal & rice.
